Client Discovery with Austin and Lindsay (Meeting 1)

In this first meeting with Austin and Lindsay, you will see how a financial planner conducts an in-depth discovery session with a high-income couple who know they should be doing more with their money but are not sure where to start. Watch how Hannah uses the net worth statement, a goals conversation, and a values discussion to help Austin and Lindsay articulate what they actually want, surface the decisions in front of them, and lay the groundwork for a full financial plan.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Use the net worth statement as a tool to pull together a client's full financial picture and identify what is missing, including accounts, loans, and documents.
  • Facilitate a goals conversation that moves clients from vague long-term aspirations to concrete near-term priorities that can be acted on in the financial plan.
  • Identify and explore client money values in a way that reveals who they are today and who they want to become.
  • Recognize when a client's career and financial decisions are unnecessarily entangled and how a financial plan can create the clarity that separates them.
  • Understand the role of the paraplanner in a client engagement, including data gathering, document review, and meeting support.
  • Explain the key features and differences of an annuity contract compared to a standard investment account, including contract numbers, variable vs. guaranteed interest, Roth vs. traditional designations, and rollover considerations.
