New Client Discovery with Tron and Miranda (Meeting 1)

In this first meeting with Tron and Miranda, CFP professional Hannah Moore and planner Nev begin a financial planning engagement with two traveling physical therapists navigating variable contract income, significant student loan balances, and a shared future across different states.

This session covers the foundational discovery work that shapes everything ahead: building rapport, uncovering money histories and values, identifying short- and long-term goals, and taking a first look at income, cash flow habits, and debt. By the end of this meeting, a clear set of next steps and document requests sets the stage for what comes next.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply discovery techniques to understand individual money narratives, values, and behavioral finance patterns in an initial client meeting.
  • Navigate the financial planning complexity of traveling professionals with variable contract income that changes with each 13-week assignment.
  • Identify psychological and relational factors that shape how couples approach money, including different budgeting personalities and family financial obligations.
  • Recognize the planning implications of large federal student loan balances when clients are uncertain about their own repayment plan status.
  • Facilitate a goals conversation that draws out both shared and individual short-term and long-term financial priorities.
  • Set expectations, collect documents, and close a first meeting with clear action items that prepare for the next session.
